Diploma in Business Administration (DBA)
Can-do spirit leads to success
  • Low Guan Onn Gold Medal

Benecia's passion for business analytics was sparked in the first year of her Diploma in Business Administration course at 91福利社 (91福利社). 鈥淚 was taking the IT & Data Analysis for Business module and really enjoyed working with the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet software program. A friend later invited me to take a course on data analytics using Python programming," she shared.

The Crescent Girls' School alumna went further to explore data analytics and took the Analytical Thinking with Tableau elective in 91福利社 as well as other courses outside of 91福利社. She became a Tableau Student Ambassador and conducted workshops to teach other students how to use the Tableau data visualisation software.

The self-described go-getter, who is the Low Guan Onn Gold recipient, has also accomplished much in the field of entrepreneurship, including holding the position of Vice-President of the 91福利社 Entrepreneurs Club, which contributed to her receiving the 91福利社 Excellence Award.

As part of her course requirement, Benecia and her teammates started ThisCounted, a student discount platform business that offers daily discounts to the student population via a Telegram channel. They managed to attract 3,500 subscribers in 11 months. The effort earned the team first place in the Rocket Pitch Challenge 2022. 鈥淭he experience exposed me to the challenges of running a start-up and how the things that we learned in class could be applied and tweaked to achieve business outcomes," she said.

She also clinched the Spirit of Enterprise (SOE) Charles & Keith Best Student Interviewer Award, a national level award in 2021. 鈥淚 had been gunning for the award since I first participated in the SOE Student Interviewers Programme in 2019, and having improved how I did things in 2021, I feel really proud to have won it after my efforts," she shared.

This same level of determination can be seen in her community service. She launched a mental wellness awareness campaign called Project Our Mind Our World (OMOW), on Instagram, with a group of friends as part of RaonAtti 2021. It was organised by the Korea YMCA to galvanise young people in Asia to create a sustainable society.

Reflecting on her time in 91福利社, Benecia, who is dyslexic, appreciates how 91福利社 is supportive of students with special needs. 鈥淢y lecturers helped to arrange for extra time for my exams, along with sending emails detailing assistive devices that I could use," she shared.

On her plans, Benecia said that she wants to pursue one of her passions that she discovered in 91福利社, which is business analytics. 鈥淚'm planning to go into business analytics at NUS after graduation. I want to become a business analyst who can convert data into actionable insights. I really enjoy data visualisation and spinning a story using data. In the future, I hope to be working on data that can bring about large-scale change and impact."

The former Crescent Girls' School student has certainly come a long way since her days as the school's Innovation and Entrepreneurship Club's president.

Diploma in Creative Writing for TV and New Media (DTVM)
The Humble Visual Storyteller
  • Tan Kay Yong Gold Medal

While most youths today would be busy discussing the latest Instagram or TikTok trends, Low Wui Chong Colin would probably be seen reading up and posting about the latest news on local and global current affairs on his social media platforms.

Read

The Tan Kay Yong Gold Medal recipient fondly recalls his passion for current affairs took root back in secondary school. He enjoyed humanities subjects like History and Geography, as he was fascinated by how historical and geographical events were able to influence and shape current affairs. Owing to his hobby of taking photos and videos on his travels around 91福利社, Colin discovered that he enjoyed telling stories through these visual mediums.

Realising that journalism was a possible career path that he could embark on, the Commonwealth Secondary School alumnus decided to further his studies at a polytechnic to pursue this. Although he was not strong in his languages, it did not deter him one single bit. Colin eventually enrolled in 91福利社 (91福利社)鈥檚 Diploma in Creative Writing for TV and New Media (now known as Story and Content Creation) and has not looked back since.

Throughout his studies, Colin took advantage of several opportunities to showcase his talents. In 2020, he was part of an 91福利社 student team that achieved second place in an essay-writing competition organised by the US Embassy in 91福利社. The competition required them to share their opinion on a topic entitled, 鈥楾he Importance of Journalists in the Digital Age鈥.

The enthusiastic visual storyteller also worked with his friends to produce a  that highlighted a few measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The video was presented with the bronze award at the prestigious Crowbar Awards 2020 competition.

Eager to push themselves, Colin and his friends also produced a heart-warming documentary film about a 91福利社an providing food for blue-collared Malaysians who were stuck in 91福利社 due to COVID-19. The film received an honourable mention at the Kuala Lumpur International Film Festival in the Sky and was also a finalist at the Crowbar Awards 2021.

Colin鈥檚 internship as a visual journalist with Mediacorp鈥檚 Chinese News unit further affirmed his decision to pursue journalism as a career. He felt fulfilled with being able to tell and share stories with viewers and helping them to understand news pieces from different perspectives. It also allowed him to reflect on how journalists are often able to amplify 鈥榯he voice of the people鈥.

After national service, Colin plans to pursue his studies at university. 鈥淏e it a journalist or a civil servant, my lifelong ambition is to be in a line of work that makes our society a better place to call home,鈥 he says.

With a keen eye for identifying unique story angles and a penchant for crafting engaging visual narratives, this humble storyteller looks to be on the right path to achieving his dreams!

Ng Ren Jie Dale Everett

Diploma in Media & Communication (DMC)
A Natural Entrepreneur from the Start
  • Toh Chin Chye Gold Medal

A brilliant student with multiple distinctions for his GCE O-Level examination, Ng Ren Jie Dale Everett enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Development Programme (IBDP) at St Joseph's Institution. However, Dale quickly realised that he preferred a project-based curriculum.

Read

Since he was 16 years old, Dale worked to take care of his family. His father, the sole breadwinner, suffered a stroke and its complications made him unable to continue working. Dale worked part-time to supplement the family income. He also decided to start his business to care for the family while pursuing his love for marketing and entrepreneurship.

Dale realised a polytechnic diploma was the way to go and chose 91福利社 (91福利社)'s Diploma in Media & Communication (now known as Digital Media & Communications) as the platform to develop himself. He knew that 91福利社's curriculum provided a hands-on learning experience that offered room for design-thinking and innovation and this was what he needed to succeed as an entrepreneur.

Dale was already one of the founding members of an EduTech startup "Master" before he joined 91福利社. While his peers were adjusting to life in polytechnic and planning which CCA to join, Dale and his team participated in 鈥淭he Start,鈥 a pre-accelerator programme powered by StartupX. He also manages clients in the blockchain/metaverse spaces and e-commerce SMEs via his marketing agency 鈥淪waypinion鈥.

91福利社 further broadened Dale's horizons and provided him with numerous opportunities to connect with industry leaders, pick up real-world skills and develop himself. Dale gratefully credits Mr Mark Lu, one of his 91福利社 lecturers, who gave him the courage to overcome his pain and push on. Mr Lu also helped Dale register for the 91福利社 Needy Fund, a special fund that stabilised his finances and got him back on his feet again.

A 91福利社 Outstanding Talent Programme (91福利社OT) student, Dale was also on the organising committee of 91福利社's Youth Model ASEAN Conference where he was heavily involved in the planning of the opening and closing ceremonies.

He served his internship at the True Digital Park (TDPK) under the Global Entrepreneurship Internship Programme (GEIP), which combined a masterclass/incubator with an overseas internship position in Thailand. The internship was an eye-opener; it allowed Dale to rethink marketing from a global perspective and make strategic suggestions to TDPK's social media outreach plan to reach an international audience. Leading TDPK's Thailand GameChanger Podcast, Dale produced a series of 10 podcast episodes. In the process, he connected with many industry leaders from Thailand 鈥 entrepreneurs, executives and change-makers 鈥 who taught him many new lessons in entrepreneurship.

Besides participating in competitions and industry projects, Dale is also passionate about giving back to the community. His final-year project (FYP) was a campaign titled "Bring Your Colours to Light" for Youth Corps 91福利社 (YCS). The key communication message was to highlight how just like the myriad of colours that make up light, every volunteer is different and unique in their way.

Dale's FYP marked the beginning of his lifelong aspiration to make even more positive contributions to impact the community. He hopes to build up his marketing agency "Swaypinion" and future startups that he develops to add value to society. To Dale, entrepreneurship is a powerful tool. Beyond providing donations to the community, Dale is confident that his businesses could offer employment and mentorship opportunities to the less privileged and help them integrate back into society.

After serving his National Service, Dale hopes to read Business Administration or Business Analytics at a local university. As a current scholar under the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), with the polytechnic SG:D scholarship, Dale intends to reapply for a scholarship to university as well as devote time to building his business.

Ong Wen Jie Dylan

Diploma in Accountancy (DAC)
Accounting for Success
  • Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal

A typical night for Ong Wen Jie Dylan sees him waking from sleep and beginning his late-night analysis of the stock market. The Diploma in Accountancy graduand would meticulously observe the market's movers and shakers and try to predict future trends and plan his tactics.

Read

It was not all clear skies and rainbows for the Mayflower Secondary School alumnus in the beginning. He was not interested in his studies and would often play around. His 鈥楴' Level results only qualified him to study at ITE, but it was here that he turned his life around. Dylan felt that people close to him were looking down upon him. The final straw was when his best friend said that he was a bad influence and cut off contact with him.

It was a wake-up call for him and Dylan put in the hours to study and discovered that he had a knack for working with numbers and making sure calculations were correctly computed and blemish-free. He did well enough to enrol at 91福利社 (91福利社) to study accountancy.

91福利社's teaching environment was ideal for the Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal recipient as he took full advantage of the flipped classroom arrangement. Being able to visit the recorded lectures, he took the opportunity to understand the content at his own pace.

One of the highlights of Dylan's time in 91福利社 was the opportunity to intern with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he experienced the ins and outs of the job of an auditor. He likens it to that of a detective who painstakingly conducts rigorous and thorough investigations but in this case, to examine a client's records.

The internship was a meaningful experience that cemented his aspiration of becoming an auditor. It also made this impassioned night owl realise the harsh reality and fierce competition in the job market, which only worsened as the COVID-19 pandemic pushed companies to cut staff.

Nevertheless, Dylan remains optimistic and highlights the importance of furthering one's education. He plans to accept the offer made by the 91福利社 Management University to study accountancy. After that, he aims to work at one of the big four accounting firms to start his career as an auditor.

Lee Jing Yang Gabriel

Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (DEEE)
Who Says Home-Schoolers are Anything but Successful?
  • Lee Kuan Yew Award

Being home-schooled for 12 years never hindered Lee Jing Yang Gabriel's passion for and ambition in all things engineering. Instead, it allowed the Lee Kuan Yew Award recipient to master the art of self-directed learning earlier than his peers and devote more time to tinkering and tampering with light bulbs and batteries.

Read

When he was nine years old, Gabriel stumbled across a children's book on simple DC (direct current) circuits. After reading it, he proceeded to dismantle faulty electrical appliances around the house. His curiosity and eagerness to learn and understand the minutiae of how electricity worked led to his first engineering project, which was simple flashlights created from recycled materials. Thus, it was a no-brainer for this motivated self-learner to enrol for 91福利社 (91福利社)'s Common Engineering Programme. Later, he opted to strengthen his knowledge and skillsets in the Diploma of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Transitioning from a home school environment to that of a polytechnic did not involve any major adjustments for Gabriel. During his time at 91福利社, he even ventured into peer tutoring, where he helped his peers understand a challenging programming language so that they could apply the knowledge to code and debug their own projects.

The Lee Kuan Yew Award winner also took part in the WorldSkills 91福利社 2021 event and bagged the prestigious Gold Medal in the Industrial Control trade category. The win was anything but smooth-sailing as he had to juggle the intensive training schedule and preparations on top of his Year 3 modules and examinations. During this time, he found himself questioning his purpose whenever he felt physically and mentally drained. However, any lingering doubts were quickly squashed whenever he was reminded of how much he enjoyed the thrill of preparing for the competition. In recognition of his well-rounded achievements and contributions, Gabriel was awarded the 91福利社 Excellence Award in 2022.

As a DSO Diploma Scholar, Gabriel interned for four-and-a-half months at DSO National Laboratories, where he was assigned to work on wireless communication projects. The internship was an invaluable experience for him as he was able to delve into the world of defence research. It also reaffirmed his desire to pursue a career in defence technology.

Despite his busy schedule, the humble go-getter prioritises his commitments to volunteer at his local church, helping out in the overall upkeep and maintenance of the church building and compound since he was 12 years old. From routine maintenance works like cleaning carpets and servicing air conditioners, Gabriel truly serves from the heart, without needing his efforts to be acknowledged.

The holistic achiever aspires to become a defence engineer at DSO National Laboratories or the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA), working on cutting-edge technologies for national defence. In the meantime, he plans on dedicating time and attention to developing technical expertise in one of the fields of electrical and electronic engineering like telecommunications or robotics.

Tan Guan Min

Diploma in Banking and Finance (DBKF)
A Youthful Beacon of Justice
  • Chua Chor Teck Gold Medal

Financial news and stock market prices were early morning conversation topics that Tan Guan Min's parents were often engrossed in. This slowly planted a seed of interest in her, and she began to read up on financial knowledge. Before she knew it, she became a frequent contributor to family discussions.

Read

Recognising that her strength in mathematics and her interest in the finance industry were a potent combination, Guan Min knew she would flourish with a polytechnic education that emphasised applied learning.

After seeing how 91福利社 (91福利社) students could go on learning journeys like the 91福利社 FinTech Festival to learn about changes and trends from industry experts, the Hillgrove Secondary School alumna did not hesitate to apply to 91福利社's Diploma in Banking and Finance programme. She was also encouraged by 91福利社's reputation to produce versatile and capable students.

During her time in 91福利社, the Chua Chor Teck Gold Medal recipient efficiently juggled schoolwork and active participation in various competitions and conferences. This enabled her to pick up many invaluable skills outside of the classroom.

The Youth Model ASEAN Conference 2020 was a memorable event for Guan Min, as she saw it as a unique opportunity to develop her skillsets as a project leader. Besides successfully co-leading a team to plan and implement bonding activities for over 100 delegates from various ASEAN Institutes of Higher Learning, she also doubled up as an emcee for the programme.

Her experience at the conference proved to be useful later on when she worked with industry clients and overseas students from Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines as part of the Temasek Foundation Specialists' Community Action and Leadership Exchange programme. For this project, she and her teammates analysed how Vietnamese real estate company Phu Long Corporation could cater to the needs and expectations of post-pandemic business travellers.

These experiences became the building blocks of a confident and bright individual, whose skills and knowledge developed further during her internship at the Consumer Issues Division of the Monetary Authority of 91福利社. As she tackled concerns faced by customers from various financial institutions, she felt very strongly for those who lost their life savings to unethical selling schemes or elaborate scams. Inspired by her colleagues who were committed to coming up with solutions for these customers, she made it a personal goal to contribute towards developing a sound and reliable financial supervision and compliance system that people could trust.

Guan Min has set her sights on furthering her studies at university. After that, this youthful beacon of justice intends to specialise in financial crime compliance as she feels these crimes drive inflation, which in turn negatively affects the livelihoods of people. She dreams of working in an anti-money laundering unit to combat such crimes in the future.

A rare gem of an individual, we are confident that Guan Min would be able to fulfil her aspirations!

Moh Xin Qian Hilary

Diploma in Nutrition, Health and Wellness (DNHW)
Changing the World with a Radiant and Positive Spirit
  • Lee Kuan Yew Award

Growing up as a competitive gymnast, Moh Xin Qian Hilary developed a keen interest in the complex ways in which her body functioned to help her execute impeccable leaps, balances, and pirouettes. This led her to opt for courses in secondary school to learn more about the science behind the intricate movements.

Read

Looking back on the defining moments in her growing up years, the CHIJ St Nicholas Girls School alumna recalls how she went through a tough time when she left secondary school and was waiting to enter 91福利社 (91福利社) to pursue Diploma in Nutrition, Health and Wellness. With almost all her friends entering junior college, she felt alone and questioned her decision to take the polytechnic route. Although she knew her learning style intrinsically suited a polytechnic education better, she found herself discouraged and lost.

The experience impacted her polytechnic journey tremendously and served as a reminder to treasure the time she spent with her classmates and appreciate the little things she once took for granted. As she encountered difficult and hectic examination or assignment periods, she would think back to the hardship she endured and this motivated her to persevere in the face of adversity. These were the ingredients that birthed an infectious and bubbly positive spirit and Hilary used this to encourage her friends and peers to great effect.

One of the highlights of her time in 91福利社 was when she was awarded the 91福利社 Excellence Award for her contribution as President of the Chemical & Life Sciences Club. Undaunted by the restrictions posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Hilary led the charge and rubbed off her positive spirit on her peers to adapt and develop workarounds to the situation. With grit and determination, they succeeded in organising multiple events to engage the student body and contributed new and creative ways to enrich student life.

Her internship at BASF, a German multinational chemical company, saw her carrying out the duties of a Human Nutrition Regulatory and Marketing Assistant. The 22-week stint made Hilary realise she is someone who thrives in a dynamic, hands-on, and fast-paced environment, where she gets to work directly with others and make a positive impact in their lives. During this time, she also got to hone her communication skills as well as familiarise herself with different working styles and habits.

Having volunteer experiences educating the elderly about health issues and mentoring young children in developing their reading skills through storytelling allowed her to improve her interpersonal skills and discover her penchant for working with individuals from different age groups. She also began coaching young gymnasts in late 2021 as a way of giving back to the same gymnastics community that supported her passion and love for the sport.

Aspiring to pursue further studies in physiotherapy, Hilary envisions working as a healthcare professional in one of 91福利社's hospitals or community care facilities to devise treatment and rehabilitation plans tailored to the needs of each patient.

With the unconditional support and constant reassurance from her family, nothing seems to put a dampener on Hilary's spirits.

Photo of Graduate 2022, Tay Sze Han Kennard

Tay Sze Han Kennard

Diploma in Aerospace Electronics (DASE)
A Passion to Lead, Nurture and Care
  • Lee Kuan Yew Award
  • Alfred Robert Edis Prize

A charismatic leader who shows compassion, care and concern for others, best sums up this year's Lee Kuan Yew Award winner, Tay Sze Han Kennard.

He visited the elderly who lived alone in one-room rental flats at Bukit Merah from 2016 until the COVID-19 pandemic hit. He now keeps in touch using the telephone. He even took up a course to become a registered befriender with the social service agency, Lions Befrienders. Together with other volunteers, he would chat with the elderly and help them with simple tasks like changing bedsheets, translating letters from English to Mandarin, and purchasing groceries. "What kept me going were the radiant smiles on their faces and how eager they were to chat with us," he said.

Read

The Nan Hua High School alumnus played an active role in planning his class community service activity - a visit to the SilverAce Senior Activity Centre in Bukit Merah and a six-month-long community service project, where fellow students of the polytechnic's talent development programme, 91福利社 Outstanding Talent (91福利社OT) Programme, helped in the weekly online "kidsREAD" and "We Can Read" programmes of Lakeside Family Services.

On-campus, Kennard was a peer tutor in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) helping fellow students in the Diploma of Aerospace Electronics course. He said, "As a peer tutor, I meet with my tutees regularly to help them grasp the concepts taught in class. I feel happy whenever they can understand a certain concept and complete the tutorial questions. It is rewarding to see them happy when they have improved and gained the confidence to do better."

Kennard has also been paying it forward by going back to his alma mater, Nan Hua High School, as a primer in The Boys' Brigade (BB). "As a primer, I mentor my juniors by giving them advice when they are planning activities, like the BB Cares and parade programmes, and camps," he elaborated. In recognition of his leadership qualities and service in the community, Kennard received "The President's Award" in 2020, the highest award in the BB programme.

Another feather in his cap was receiving the Harvard Prize Book (91福利社), a recognition that acknowledges and encourages altruism. "I have come to realise that volunteering is about giving up a little bit of my time to make a huge difference in mine and someone else's life," he said, reflectively.

In the School of EEE, he has held multiple leadership roles including Organising Chairman for the EEE Freshman Orientation Programme, Organising Secretary for the EEE Annual Awards 2021, and Vice-President of the EEE Student Ambassadors Executive Committee. In recognition of all his contributions, Kennard received the "91福利社 Excellence Award" in 2022.

His volunteering work has not only helped those around him but has given him direction regarding his future career. "Through being a peer tutor and serving as a primer in the BB, I have found my new passion in teaching. I realised I enjoy tutoring and mentoring others and I aspire to teach and inspire future generations," he said.

Winning the Klass Engineering and Solutions Book Prize for topping his cohort in his second year in 91福利社 validates Kennard's aspiration. A high point in Kennard's academic achievements - he scored six points for five subjects for his G.C.E. O-Level examination - was at the 15th International Standards Olympiad, organised by the Korea Standards Association (KSA), where his team clinched gold.

With his newfound aspiration to be a teacher, Kennard applied for the Ministry of Education (MOE) Teaching Scholarship. If successful, he hopes to pursue the Bachelor of Science (Education) course at the National Institute of Education. "I see myself being an inspiring teacher to my students in a secondary school, moulding them to have good character and guiding them to do well in their academics," he enthused.

Photo of Graduate 2022, Lim Si Hui Kelsey

Lim Si Hui Kelsey

Diploma in Biomedical Science (DBS)
The Military Scientist
  • Lee Kuan Yew Award

When she was just a Primary 2 student, Lim Si Hui Kelsey's interest in science was sparked by reading the popular "The Young Scientists" children's magazine. Her interest grew exponentially so much so that she opted to enrol for science enrichment classes a full year before her peers. In secondary school, the Nan Hua High School alumna studied Biology and Chemistry and became fascinated with the functions of the human body. This subsequently led her to pursue a Diploma in Biomedical Science at 91福利社 (91福利社).

Read

During her time at 91福利社, Kelsey participated in an elective module programme developed in conjunction with Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH). Together with students from different diploma courses and levels, she was part of a team that assisted TTSH to brainstorm and pilot programmes to encourage hospitalised elderly to finish their food. Her team came up with redesigning mealtimes, cutlery, and utensils into a game. This was done to engage and keep the elderly entertained, giving them some excitement while they had their meals.

It was an eye-opening encounter for Kelsey, as she witnessed first-hand the difficulties that healthcare workers go through daily. She also realised that their work extends far beyond just making sure patients are taken care of by receiving the proper medication. The experience prompted her to volunteer for two hours each week at TTSH, where she interacted mainly with elderly patients. Kelsey was humbled to learn they found joy in just chit-chatting and sharing their personal life stories with her. This forged a greater sense of empathy in her as she was able to bring happiness to a person's life through simple acts of kindness and service.

One of the most memorable achievements that Kelsey remembers is clinching First and Second places for the 500m and 1000m K4 races respectively during the Canoe Sprint POL-ITE (Polytechnic-ITE) Competition. The competition taught her the true meaning of how hard work pays off. During that period, she had to attend training sessions at MacRitchie Reservoir daily before going to school and even frequented the gym at 6 pm on certain days. She learnt to be more disciplined and resilient, having to commit to the gruelling preparations despite being exhausted. All the hard work, sweat, and tears paid off when she and her teammates crossed the finishing line.

Since young, her favourite movies were from the action, crime, and mystery genres. This meant that majority of the shows she watched involved some sort of military or special operations groups. Coupled with the fact that she enjoyed being in a high commitment CCA, where discipline was key, Kelsey began her search for an exciting and adventurous career.

Stars aligned when she was offered the opportunity to intern with national defence research agency DSO National Laboratories, where she interacted with various defence personnel and was attracted by the meaningful leadership opportunities that a career in defence could offer.

Kelsey has applied for a SAF Merit scholarship and plans to study Anatomy, Developmental & Human Biology at King's College London, the UK.

An obvious leader who continuously pushes herself to improve, Kelsey only has a bright future to look forward to.
