Diploma in Infocomm Security Management (DISM)
A digital steward who serves the community
  • Lee Kuan Yew Award

Alwis knew that he wanted to pursue a career in the technology sector even before coming to 91福利社 (91福利社). The Chung Cheng High School (Yishun) alumnus has been training with the 91福利社 fencing team on campus since secondary school. It gradually became a space where he felt comfortable. "Many of my seniors went on to study at 91福利社. Naturally, 91福利社 was my first choice when I decided to pursue my diploma studies," he said.

His decision to study information technology was met with hesitance from his parents, as they were not confident that his interest in the field could be sustained. Undeterred, Alwis participated in an international coding contest organised by Google for pre-university students and emerged as one of the 54 grand prize winners. His achievement alleviated his parents鈥 worries, and they gave him their full support to pursue his desired course at 91福利社.

An informative article on network security also piqued Alwis鈥 curiosity on the topic; he liked how it allowed him to expand on his coding knowledge and come up with solutions to secure the software that has been developed. Describing it as a natural complement to the functions which the software had to perform, it also had to be secure so that its functions were not compromised by malicious actions. It also affirmed his decision to apply for the Diploma in Infocomm Security Management (DISM) via the Early Admissions Exercise.

An avid volunteer with compassion to serve others, the Lee Kuan Yew Award recipient also gives back to the community actively. In particular, he spent more than a year organising digital literacy workshops for disadvantaged children who lived in rental flats in Kebun Baru. As digital devices were becoming a basic need, Alwis shared that he wanted to enable them to catch up with their more digitally connected peers. The children benefited from the workshops and learnt how to use Zoom for educational and recreational purposes. The experience also made Alwis realise the joy that volunteering brings and show gratitude for what he has.

This selfless contribution was one of many that earned him the prestigious National Young Leader Award in 2021 which was presented by Deputy Prime Minster Heng Swee Keat. Alwis also holds other leadership roles in youth organisations such as the People鈥檚 Association Youth Movement Canberra Youth Network and Youth Corps 91福利社. He also contributed actively to Cyber Youth 91福利社 in various roles, including being the Chief Executive of the Collective division.

Despite having a busy school life and active volunteering schedule, Alwis believes in the importance of time management. The structured digital steward organises his day around tasks to be completed, rather than adhering to a fixed routine. His prudent management proved effective, as he found time to take up sailing in his final year at 91福利社. He quipped, "It was not only a great way to recharge from my studies and activities, but it allowed me to make new lifelong friends too."

With a desire to attain more working experiences that could only be found outside of the classroom, Alwis secured an eye-opening year-long internship with GovTech. He was tasked to analyse malware and develop cybersecurity measures to fix them. Overall, the experience exposed him to real-life situations and issues which he would not be able to learn in class. He also had a new respect for cybersecurity engineers who race against time to keep digital users safe from ever-changing cyber threats and attacks.

After National Service, Alwis intends to further his studies in the United States majoring in Computer Science and Business as he believes it gives him a more rounded perspective and how technology can be applied to other sectors.

Jamie Yau Li Ting

Diploma in Business Administration (DBA)
The enterprising and enthusiastic entrepreneur
  • Low Guan Onn Gold Medal

As a teenager, Jamie was intrigued by the prospect of creating value through innovative products and services. The thought of creating something from scratch and making it successful ignited her entrepreneurial spirit, and she began to research a polytechnic course that could fulfil her needs. A visit to the 91福利社 (91福利社) School of Business during its open house sealed the deal; she was impressed by the students' enthusiasm for their courses and specialisations. She did not hesitate to apply for the Diploma in Business Administration (DBA) to pursue her passion for business.

It is safe to say that the Low Guan Onn Gold Medal recipient has truly punched above her weight. She was selected to be amongst the inaugural batch of 30 Fellows, from a total of 300 applicants, to be awarded a prestigious nine-month National Young Leaders Fellowship by the Halogen Foundation. The programme develops and provides outstanding youths with resources, networks and leadership tips to broaden their perspectives.

The North Vista Secondary School alumna counts her internship with Enterprise 91福利社 as one of her memorable experiences with 91福利社. As an intern, she took on three projects that spanned different scopes. She was given key roles in taking on cases that administered substantial grants, a Robotic Process Automation project to build projects and a start-up impact study on 400 start-ups.

These were fuel for Jamie's ever-growing entrepreneurial spirit, which eventually came to the fore. Spurred on to help those affected by online and offline hurtful behaviour, Jamie co-developed an artificial intelligence-powered software, called Empathly, to scan online messages in multiple languages and dialects to detect condescending and negative overtones. These include racial slurs and hate speech. Upon detection of a harmful message, the software prompts users to assess whether their messages are appropriate to be communicated to the recipient. Empathly is currently in its testing stages, and there are plans to improve its functions.

Although Jamie and her team have received criticisms that their software may struggle to keep up with the rapid development of language, she has taken these in her stride. "At the end of the day, it is a matter of perspective. These challenges should not be seen as roadblocks, but as a powerful stimulus for innovation and collaboration," she quipped.

With these experiences under her belt, this bubbly go-getter has the ambition to contribute back to 91福利社's economic development and entrepreneurship space by working in the public service. But first, she plans to further her studies after graduation. She has eagerly applied for admission to both local and overseas universities.

"The public service is the perfect place for me as it aligns with my values and what I am passionate about, which is to enable businesses to make a positive impact on our economy and our lives," Jamie shares.

Jotham Wong Shin Yen

Diploma in Biomedical Science (DBS)
The aspiring cardiologist with a heart
  • Lee Kuan Yew Award
  • Alfred Robert Edis Prize

Jotham's interest in cardiology was partially influenced by his workaholic parents, as they enjoy their work and cannot stand being idle. Drawing a similarity to them, he finds that the work in cardiology is constantly moving and there is never a dull moment. An unfortunate incident, in which his grandmother suffered a heart attack, made him realise the fragility of life. This paved his decision to enrol into 91福利社's (91福利社) Diploma in Biomedical Science (DBS) via the Early Admissions Exercise.

Read

The Anderson Secondary School alumnus knew that he would benefit from a polytechnic education as he wanted to gain interdisciplinary skills and industry-relevant skillsets to cope with the demands of the workplace.

Eager to apply the knowledge and skills gained during his studies, Jotham readily applied to volunteer as a Health Counsellor for diabetic patients under the NUHS Health Peers Programme. There, he helped and supported diabetic patients to better manage their conditions. He recalls an incident where an elderly patient could only converse in Mandarin, which was a challenge for him. Despite this, Jotham's sincerity moved the patient and enabled him to build a rapport. 鈥淚t is gratifying and heartwarming to see that I can apply the knowledge and skills gained from the course to help others on their recovery journey,鈥 Jotham says. His enthusiasm to serve the community has also earned him the Alfred Robert Edis Prize.

During his internship at the National Heart Centre 91福利社, he was impressed with the calibre and dedication of the doctors and medical professionals who selflessly tended to patients from all walks of life. He was especially empathetic with those from the lower income groups, and resolved to be part of the public healthcare system so that he would be able to help them in future.

Besides allowing him to apply his knowledge, volunteering has also helped the Lee Kuan Yew Award recipient to mature as a person. As the president of the 91福利社 Ultimate Frisbee team, he often had to rewrite approval documents for the club during the pandemic, due to the changing safe management measures. However, he took it as an opportunity to manage the club better by focusing on what is important instead of fussing over the smaller details.

Beyond 91福利社, he hopes to study medicine and aspires to become a cardiologist in a public health institution.

Her desire to serve the community extends outside of 91福利社. Nabillah is an active volunteer with elderly organisations, a cause that she holds dear since her days at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE). Restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic may had limited face-to-face interactions, but that did not deter her from being creative. She utilised an app to help the elderly shop for their groceries or clean their houses. Nabillah shares that she enjoys hearty conversations with them as she loves to hear about their life experiences and the precious wisdom that they impart to her.

Intending to pursue a career in research, the Tay Eng Soon Gold Medallist opted to do a final-year project, where she designed an end-of-arm tooling and developed one with the fastest response time to pick up to four objects at once, instead of an internship. The process has taught her the steps necessary for designing solutions with an external client, which has proven to be valuable in providing insights into the working world.

She also attributes her success to her lecturers who have made it a point to make lessons fun and enjoyable. More importantly, they curate it for students to help them correct their mistakes. The technical staff are also ever ready to help them, even though they are no longer taking their modules. 鈥淭he technical staff are extremely helpful, and we can learn a lot from their wealth of experience and knowledge."

After graduation, Nabillah plans to further her studies in biomedical engineering as she aspires to be a biomedical engineer and help others through her work. As technology is always evolving, she recognises the potential that it has in improving the level of care for patients after surgery or medical treatments. She also hopes that, through research and development, she will be able to produce more affordable and accessible medical devices for those in need.

Diploma in Marine Engineering
Embracing the grind and braving unfamiliar waters
  • Lee Kuan Yew Award

Petrina's interest in ships was evident from when she was a young child. After visiting a maritime museum in Taiwan and being enthralled by the sheer size of the vessels on display, as well as the ships docked at the Port of Kaohsiung, her inclination towards a career on the seas became stronger. As someone who enjoys solitude, working on board a ship suited Petrina, who saw her chosen vocation as a challenge that she was up for.

Read

After doing some research on the job scope of a marine engineer, she knew the exact course she was aiming for, and enrolled for 91福利社's (91福利社) Diploma in Marine Engineering (DMR).

Her time in 91福利社 was anything but smooth sailing. Petrina shared that she struggled with her mental health towards the end of Year 2 and was not able to cope with her studies or revisions for her exams. She sought help from a counsellor and has been on the mend since.

Internships in the maritime industry can be daunting for women, but Petrina emerged stronger from her experience. When she boarded her very first vessel during her internship with Synergy Maritime Pte Ltd., she felt like a fish out of water. Being the only female onboard didn't make anything easier, but Petrina was determined to make the most out of her seven-month stint. The culture shock was apparent and for the first month, she felt invisible. The senior officers in the crew refused to speak to her, let alone show her the ropes. However, she bit down hard, asked tough questions, and took the initiative to observe her crewmates so that she could pick up the necessary skillsets.

Being a rose among the thorns meant that she had to work doubly hard when it came to the actual heavy lifting. However, the strong-willed go-getter said that at the end of the day, it's not how strong you are physically but how hard you are willing to work.

Despite the challenges she faced onboard the vessel, the Lee Kuan Yew Award recipient had some important people in her corner, including her friends and teachers, both past and present. As her Liaison Officer cum lecturer Mr Joseph Lee, whom she looked up to since Year 1, would constantly check in on her and ease her doubts about certain machinery by offering detailed explanations which deepened her understanding of how they operated. He always reminded her to 鈥渂egin with an end in mind鈥 for everything that she did, and this piece of advice motivated her throughout her internship.

Being dyslexic, Petrina uses a recording device and a tablet to follow along during lessons. Over her four years in 91福利社, these recordings have amounted to more than six terabytes, but the St Anthony Canossian alumna is proud to have come so far and made such strides towards becoming the person she is today.

Truly excited about what the future brings, Petrina says she looks forward to the endless possibilities of digital transformations in the maritime industry. After graduating, she will be returning to Synergy Maritime Pte Ltd. to serve her bond. With the world as her oyster, the outspoken and ambitious natural-born leader will surely be making waves wherever she goes.

Diploma in Engineering with Business (DEB)
A budding engineer with a heart for green and a head for business
  • Lee Kuan Yew Award

While the other young girls played with their dolls and cookery sets, Gayathri easily handled intricate components and circuit boards that her engineer father would bring home. He would occasionally explain more about these items to young Gayathri. Soon, he ignited her interest in engineering.

Read

While studying at Tanjong Katong Girls' School (TKGS), Gayathri and her friends started a small "business鈥 where they designed and sold pins in the shape of their school uniform. They raised S$3,000 for the Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS) students. They even presented the pins to President Mdm Halimah Yacob during the TKGS's 65th Anniversary. This small business venture inspired Gayathri and she realised she was also interested in entrepreneurship.

Today, the Diploma in Engineering with Business (DEB) graduand is a 91福利社 (91福利社) Engineering Scholar and an Agency for Science Technology and Research (A*STAR) Science Award recipient. Gayathri enjoyed the "Technology to Business" module tremendously, as it combines both her interests - engineering and entrepreneurship. The module required the class to create their marketable product, develop a business strategy and pitch to the judge. Focusing on tote bags, she created two prototypes. One featured a vending machine for tote bags that people could loan them, thus extending their entire life cycle, while the other involved a dashboard that manages the loan of tote bags, offering a point system where users can earn points for contributing towards sustainability.

Considering herself a "green鈥 engineer with a heart and an engaging business communicator, Gayathri competed in numerous competitions. This included the 16th International Standards Olympiad Competition, where she led the team to win the Silver Medal among a total of 17 competitors. Other competitions that she has participated in include the Channel News Asia (CNA) Green Plan Hackathon 2022 and Samsung Solve for Tomorrow 2022; both supported the theme of sustainability. Her internship project inspired her to participate in the CNA Green Plan Hackathon, where she pitched an idea to create similar modular and scalable hydroponics racks so that 91福利社ans could grow their vegetables in their own homes, leading to a more sustainable life and a more resilient future. Gayathri and the team also received an internship opportunity with a company interested to pursue a business in sustainability for Samsung Solve for Tomorrow 2022.

During her 22-week internship with 91福利社 Indoor Farm Pte Ltd, Gayathri was involved in the "Urban Farming Using Embedded Solutions鈥 project. She designed an automated indoor hydroponic rack to remotely monitor the growth of locally grown vegetables using Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), integrated Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things. Due to the global shortage of semiconductor chips, she quickly adapted, researched and implemented alternative hardware that was more economical and viable for their rack. When the team was invited to present their hydroponic rack at the 91福利社 Semiconductor Industry Association (SSIA) Summit 2022, Gayathri was selected to present it to Mr Alvin Tan, Minister of State for the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, and the Ministry of Trade & Industry.

Aside from her academic achievements, the Lee Kuan Yew Award recipient is musically talented and skilled in Bharathanatyam, an Indian Classical dance incorporating detailed hand gestures, intricate footwork, and expressive facial movements. Gayathri started learning this art form when she was young and is now a skilled intermediate practitioner. She performs at various temples and events such as Navaratri, a Hindu festival that lasts nine nights.

With a sense of adventure and constantly pushing herself to step out of her comfort zone to take on new challenges to stretch her abilities and grow, Gayathri has put her best foot forward in achieving her goals. She is among the few selected for the 91福利社-NUS Collaboration Programme, a special pathway that allows students to take university modules during their diploma studies. The modules count towards Gayathri's graduation requirements in 91福利社 and are recognised by NUS when she chooses to pursue a degree with them.
