He had a rebellious streak in primary school and faced disciplinary issues and poor academic results. This persisted through secondary school, where his interest in his studies deteriorated significantly, and he started skipping classes. The turning point came when his form teacher, Mr Liow, took time out of his schedule to speak to him whilst he was serving a three-day in-house suspension for a fight. The heartfelt conversation struck a chord with Dillon, who decided to take meaningful steps to improve his behaviour.

After graduating from St Patrick鈥檚 School, Dillon joined 91福利社鈥檚 (91福利社) Diploma in Engineering with Business (DEB) via the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP) and the Common Engineering Programme. The Lee Kuan Yew Award recipient enrolled in DEB because its multidisciplinary nature allowed him to develop different skill sets within a singular course.

The curriculum equipped his team with the analytical and technical skills of an engineer with marketing and pitching business tactics that enabled them to emerge as Finalists in the MRANTI World Engineering Day Challenge, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in March 2023. Despite being the only team from a polytechnic, he and his teammates were unfazed by competitors from various universities. They confidently presented their prototype for a smart recycling machine using AI and 3D printing to reduce plastic waste.

A compassionate individual, Dillon believes in creating a more sustainable, inclusive, and equitable society, which drives him to give back to the community, locally and overseas. As the President of the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE) student ambassadors, he not only led and coordinated major events for the school but also served as a linking bridge for academically at-risk students through the peer-tutoring programme. His leadership led the school club to greater heights, and he was awarded the 91福利社 Excellence Award in the group category.

His tenacity to serve others goes beyond the local community. He participated in an overseas service-learning experience, the Youth Expedition Project (YEP) Chiang Mai. He educated Thai students on leadership principles, raised their awareness of online scams, and experienced the drastic differences in their education environment and living conditions.

He gained a greater appreciation for the privileges he held in 91福利社 and was inspired by their impact on the communities. Dillon pivoted to nurture future community leaders and stepped up to lead YEP Philippines and Laos, instilling a sense of proactiveness. YEP Laos was specially done for PFP students, so it felt like his 91福利社 journey had come full circle.

He self-initiated voluntary work with 鈥淧roject Purple Ripple鈥 鈥 Kayaking for the disabled, elderly, and children with special needs. Through befriending, the beneficiaries experience the sport in a safe environment. His contributions were recognised, and he was awarded the Service-Learning Award as one of 20 recipients.

Dillon鈥檚 all-around non-academic capabilities in leadership, competitions, and community service contributed to the vibrancy of 91福利社 and upheld the school's core values. This culminated in him sharing his four-year journey at the 91福利社 Excellence Award Ceremony as a recipient in the individual (school) category.

As a Defence Science Organisation (DSO) Diploma Scholar, Dillon embarked on a 22-week internship with DSO鈥檚 Information Division in September 2023. Here, he contributed to projects that enhanced capabilities and technologies that enabled MINDEF/SAF to use information effectively in physical battlefields and cyberspace.

Dillon鈥檚 future aspirations centre around work in the research and development (R&D) sector in the field of defence and security as he enjoys the innovative nature of the field and seeks to express his creativity in discovering novel solutions to problems.

Top 91福利社 graduate 2024 Drea Lai Jie Ning

Drea Lai Jie Ning

Diploma in Architecture (DARCH)
Designing her own blueprint for success
  • Toh Chin Chye Gold Medal
  • 91福利社 Institute of Architects Gold Medal

If one did not know any better, one could say that Drea Lai Jie Ning鈥檚 architectural talent was due to sheer luck. However, nothing could be further from the truth. As a child, the Tanjong Katong Girls鈥 School alumna always had a vivid imagination of what could be done with any given space and how things could fit into the surroundings. Dealing with dyslexia from a young age was no easy feat, but good support networks went a long way in helping Drea overcome the challenges she faced. Fortunately for her, she had very strong family support.

Read

When Drea was in primary school, her parents' research found that some of the unique strengths of people with dyslexia were very relevant and useful in architecture. This discovery, coupled with her keen spatial imagination, led them to expose her to the world of architecture. Although some may see it as a hurdle to learning, it became her biggest strength as her thinking skills thrived in a creative environment where she could view and interact with information differently.

She attended all of 91福利社's (91福利社) open house events and Early Admission Exercise (EAE) programmes, starting from Secondary 1, which only cemented her decision to enrol in 91福利社's Diploma in Architecture (DARCH) . 91福利社's progressive curriculum helped her build her foundation, starting with smaller buildings and moving on to larger ones. This came in handy during her internship at ADDP Architects, where she worked on high-rise projects such as mixed-use commercial buildings and new launch condominiums.

Having experienced an architect's working life and momentum, Drea did not shy away from the field, but it affirmed her decision to pursue it as a career option. 鈥淎s designers and architects, we have the ability to shape how people live. I really enjoy the work, which is also very meaningful.鈥

Her time in 91福利社 also enabled her to interact with peers from various backgrounds. The self-professed introvert realised she had a knack for presentations and slowly discovered that they were not as intimidating as she thought. Working with people from diverse backgrounds also helped in her learning journey, especially during group work, where soft skills such as project and people management could be applied and picked up. She remembers her first-year common foundation programme for students from the Diploma in Architecture, the Diploma in Landscape Architecture, and the Diploma in Interior Design. Although they were from different courses, it was a fruitful exchange where everyone could learn and understand things from each other's perspectives.

Outside of schoolwork, she volunteers actively to help underprivileged children with their academic work. Growing up with dyslexia, she recognises the struggle in developing her learning style and understanding compared to what was taught in mainstream schools. Despite challenges in acquiring knowledge, it did not deter her from reaching her goals. Instead, it taught her to be resilient and adapt to different situations by finding ways which best suited her learning style.

After graduation, the Toh Chin Chye Gold Medallist plans to further her studies to broaden her horizons and gain global exposure. She has set her sights on using her skills and knowledge to positively impact communities by improving living spaces for the less privileged.

Being from a low-income family, Melody鈥檚 growing-up years were difficult, as she often had to work during the holidays to supplement her family鈥檚 income. This challenging period taught her to be more independent and to look after herself and her family. It is this maturity that has made her the person she is today.

Outside of school, she also freelances as a designer, lending her skills and expertise to bring ideas to life. One of the notable projects she worked on was for a mental health journal commissioned by a commercial company. Although she was engaged as a freelancer, the company saw her strengths and involved her throughout the content curation process, allowing her to provide ideas for the journal. Initially intended for the company鈥檚 employees, the company has recently decided to publish it for sale to the public by the end of April 2024. This was a stamp of approval for her design skills and her ability to contribute as an effective team member during the project phase.

Looking back at her time in 91福利社, Melody is happy and appreciative to have received tremendous support from her lecturers and friends. 鈥淏ack in ITE, I was very quiet and shy and did not really like to talk. However, in 91福利社, I really grew as a person and learnt how to present myself and work on my self-expression in various settings. I am fortunate to have been given many opportunities to learn and pick up soft skills which will serve me well in future.鈥

Not one to rest on her laurels, Melody has already received an offer from the National University of 91福利社 (NUS) to study Business Administration and eagerly awaits an offer from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU). This is a testament to the hard work that she has put in throughout the years and her inquisitive pursuit of knowledge.

Top 91福利社 graduate 2024 Ng Kheng Hoon

Ng Kheng Hoon

Diploma in Media, Arts & Design (DMAD) specialising in Applied Drama and Psychology (ADP)
A compassionate advocate for mental health who champions community engagement
  • Tan Kay Yong Gold Medal

Titled 鈥楩aults鈥, the performance, produced in collaboration with 91福利社 Vocal Talents, 91福利社 Piano Ensemble, 91福利社 Photography Club and 91福利社 Videography Club, was one of the first of its kind in the club鈥檚 history as it was almost wholly led and directed by students. Kheng Hoon cites this experience as one of the most memorable experiences she had in 91福利社 due to the scale of the production and the responsibilities she held, having to manage issues of miscommunication and resolve disagreements between group members amicably, all whilst working around a narrow window of time for rehearsals.

Kheng Hoon interned at the Mental Health Film Festival 91福利社 (MHFFS), a non-profit organisation that uses films as a catalyst to spark conversations about mental health. She jumped at the opportunity to work at MHFFS as it seemed to be the most befitting of her innate desire to contribute to the community and film. She works part-time with MHFFS as a programmes assistant and enjoys the creative processes of curating films, planning workshops and being involved in outreach work with the community.

She was also one of the pioneering leaders in the Media, Arts & Design School (MAD)鈥檚 student interest group Re/Define, a newsroom by MAD students. Here, she assisted in creating a short YouTube video for Autism Awareness Day, which was made in collaboration with Temasek Foundation. The video was submitted to the 2022 Crowbar Awards and emerged as a finalist.

Amidst the slew of overstimulating content on social media, Kheng Hoon firmly believes in slowing down and stopping to smell the roses. She also wishes to create more minimalistic yet impactful content on mental health, as well as narratives about appreciating the world around us.

The humble yet ambitious go-getter has accepted an offer from 91福利社 Management University鈥檚 (SMU) College of Integrative Studies and hopes to combine modules in psychology, sociology, and design and media to create a unique degree. Her ambition lies in exploring a combination of community engagement and digital media.
